The Nue Black Aesthetic opens in November: an agenda for looking at design beyond a single style
The Design Museum schedules the exhibition from 6 November 2026 to 8 August 2027. It will bring together more than one hundred objects and sixteen designers.

London’s Design Museum has scheduled The Nue Black Aesthetic from 6 November 2026 to 8 August 2027. The exhibition, with Charlene Prempeh as guest curator, announces more than one hundred objects and sixteen designers, with work spanning fashion, furniture, architecture, product design and sculpture. As of 18 October, the opening is still ahead.
The museum’s approach rejects presenting Black design as a single language. Its announcement organises the exhibition into six sections and brings together practices linked to different experiences and communities. Participants include Taiba Akhuetie, Ini Archibong, Mac Collins and Tosin Oshinowo. These are details of the announced programme, not an assessment of works examined in person by this publication.
Our own suggestion for preparing a visit is to consider each object through three questions: what problem or intention it addresses, what its material makes possible and in what context it is used or interpreted. This lets you compare a garment with a piece of furniture without requiring the same appearance. The aim would be to understand design decisions, not to look for a visual trait representing every participant.
When taking notes, separate the information on the label from your interpretation: authorship, date and material can go on one side, and personal associations on the other. If you do not understand a cultural reference, record it as a question and consult the context provided rather than inventing an explanation. Before arranging travel, check opening hours and availability on the museum’s website. No works are reproduced here and no visit is simulated: the image is a fictional creative scene generated with AI.
